In most of this book, educational research is used to establish ideas and advice about teaching. Except in The reflective practitioner: action research as a way to deal with the isolation of teaching, however, we do not analyze research studies in depth. In this appendix therefore we look at examples or cases of research studies in detail. We describe how they were conducted, reflect on their significance and meaning, and pose a few questions to consider about each study. There is approximately one case per chapter, and their topics roughly parallel one or more of the major themes of each chapter. The references for the books cited are listed at the end of each case study, as well as in the bibliographies of the chapter related to each case. Looking at the research studies in detail gives a different perspective on the research than simply using the results: “up close” the implications of a study are often not as clear as when seen from a distance.
