Seminars: English Language Open Textbooks (Feb to May 2016)

29 January, 2016 - 11:04

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) is privileged to spearhead the Open Textbooks for Hong Kong project, thanks to the generous funding from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and the continuous support of the Education Bureau. The project aims at providing open license textbooks for Hong Kong’s primary and secondary schools, institutes and universities. These open textbooks are free for use, reuse, remix, and redistribution by Hong Kong schools; they therefore provide a solution to Hong Kong’s problem of high textbook prices and at the same time promote a culture of e-learning at all education levels.

For primary and secondary schools, the project team has developed the Open English textbook series for P1 to P6 and S1 to S6; these have been written in accordance to the EDB curriculum, duly approved by the EDB, and are now on the EDB’s Recommended Textbook List (RTL). This open textbook series will be ready for adoption by schools for the 2016-17 school year.

The project is now successfully completed. In order to present our open textbooks to Hong Kong schools, we will organize monthly seminars on English Language Open Textbooks for school principals and teachers, especially English language teachers between February and May 2016.

Target audience:

School principals, English Language subject panels and teachers of primary and secondary schools

The seminar will cover:

  • the concept of open textbooks and open licenses;
  • the curriculum plan and the content design of Open English textbooks;
  • how open textbooks, in printed and electronic versions, could be freely used in the classroom; and
  • how our electronic open textbooks could be downloaded and studied.

Participants of the seminars will receive a sample unit of Open English.
