Overview of standard Web technologies

'If you're going to build a house — or a website — you need the right tools. If your house’s foundation is good, the house will stand for years despite the changing world around it.’ I saw this excellent analogy describing the standard Web technologies for building websites on the popular reference site, A List Apart.

We will take a tour of the standard languages and technologies commonly used to build websites today. Many of these standards are promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), such as HTML, XML, XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets and standardized JavaScript. We have a greater chance of creating reliable and well-formed websites by observing and using these standards. Using these standards also helps ensure that our sites will keep working even when they are viewed in new browser versions or even new kinds of devices in the future.
