The defendant must obtain property belonging to another for the completed crime of extortion in most jurisdictions. 1 If the defendant commits the criminal act of threatening the victim with the appropriate criminal intent, but the victim does not actually transfer the property to the defendant, the defendant can only be charged with attempted extortion. 2
