This chapter is organized into two parts. Part I provides a conceptual perspective on data management issues. It focuses, in particular, on the use of data to represent reality, otherwise known as data modeling. Part II, which is preparation, extends the discussion in Part I to examine the ways in which systems are constructed for managing data. This includes the use of database management systems and the role of networking in managing remote and distributed collections of data.
