A wireless PAN (personal area network) (WPAN) provides hands-free connectivity and communications within a confined range and limited throughput capacity. Bluetooth is a perfect example of a wireless PAN technology that is both beneficial and that is in widespread use. Everything from Bluetooth mice to headsets are being used on a daily basis throughout the world.

Bluetooth has been codified by the IEEE in their 802.15.1 standard, which describes WPAN technology. A Bluetooth PAN is also known as a piconet. The simplest type of piconet is one that contains one master and one slave, which communicate in a point-to-point fashion with each other.
