Appendix: implementing an MBO program

7 December, 2015 - 10:34

There are several steps in developing and implementing a program of management by objectives. It is necessary first to determine the major results areas (the aspects of the business for which objectives should be set) and then to set specific objectives. Performance is then measured and feedback is given in an employee appraisal session to the person responsible for attaining the objectives.

It should be stressed throughout that the philosophy of an MBO program is the development not only of business objectives but also of employees, toward what Douglas McGregor called "management by integration and self-control".
