If employees feel that management tends to threaten and criticize rather than praise and reward, a program of positive reinforcement is suggested. Many companies place an overemphasis on punishment to reduce unwanted behavior, without a program of positive reinforcement to increase desired behavior.

Behavioral expectations can be developed and a feedback system put into place that will reinforce the desired behavior, thus ensuring that it will be repeated.

Praise is not enough, however, to ensure desired behavior. Both money and career development can play an important part in producing motivated and productive employees.
