The chapter “Hiring productive people” expands on the realization that improved productivity begins by hiring employees who have the potential to be productive. Hiring productive employees means matching the characteristics of the future employee pool with the characteristics of the job.
This section explores the changing demographics and attitudes of the hospitality employee of the future. Increasingly we will see more women, minorities (largely Hispanic), the elderly, the handicapped, and part-time employees in the workplace. The employee of the future will also bring increased aspirations and a desire for more satisfaction on and from the job. The special problems and opportunities of each are explored in light of the characteristics of hospitality jobs.
