Selecting the job

7 December, 2015 - 17:14

A simple questionnaire can be used to assess the potential of a job for redesign.

Select a job that is giving you problems (absenteeism, turnover, poor performance) and answer each of these questions for it, on a scale of 1 to 6, where 1 equals a great deal and 6 equals very little. Place your answer in the appropriate space.

Skill variety

  • How much variety is there on the job? To what extent does the employee performing the job have the chance to do different things?
  • Does the job offer the chance to develop new skills and to advance in the company?

Task identity

  • To what extent does the job involve a whole and identifiable piece of work with a beginning and an end?

Task significance

  • Does this job affect guest satisfaction?
  • How important is this job to other people? Does it affect others' lives?

Autonomy

  • Does the job enable a person to be creative and imaginative, to use initiative?
  • Are there different ways of doing the job? Is there flexibility in job performance?

Feedback

  • To what extent are the supervisor and co-workers able and willing to let the employee know how well he or she is doing?
  • How much does the job itself, or actually doing the job, let the employee know how well he or she is doing?

Total score:

Analysis

Jobs that receive a total score of 45 to 54 are candidates for a job redesign program; they have high potential to be enlarged or enriched. Jobs that score between 9 and 18 rank low in job redesign potential.
