When either a new employee is hired to perform a task or an existing employee is trained to carry out a job a new way, it is necessary to supervise closely until the procedure becomes a habit. Supervision then can be replaced by periodic coaching, stressing the positive as well as negative aspects of performance.
While the steps outlined above have concentrated on increased productivity through standardized movements, there is a danger involved. For some employees, standardized movements may be equated with boredom. An employee may change the routine of doing a job to prevent boredom. The increase in productivity resulting from minimized movements may be offset by a loss in productivity resulting from less motivated employees. The key is to ensure that there is an excellent job match between the skills and abilities required for the task and those present in the employee.
