When employees who seek fulfillment from the job are faced with mindless repetitive work, productivity will go down. Job design offers a way to restructure the job so that it will provide satisfaction for the employee while raising productivity for the company. Management can play an active role in this process. More complex jobs, however, will require more compensation. It is for management to determine whether (possibly) fewer, more skilled employees performing more complex jobs will result in greater productivity.
