Applying the principles of motion economy, management can set up the work area. Preferably, this will be done with employees' assistance. By involving the employees who actually perform the tasks, management will reduce resistance to any proposed changes. Furthermore, it is vital that tasks are designed with the right employee in mind. The work area for an employee 1.9 meters tall would be different from that of an employee that is 1.7 meters tall.
Evaluate the procedure
After a shakedown period, it is necessary to evaluate the new procedure. At this stage it is important to ensure that employees are performing the job in the new fashion. Now the employee can be involved in helping decide whether any part of the process can be eliminated, combined, or simplified.
Establish performance standards
Once the revised procedure has been agreed to, it is important to determine new performance standards for the task. Employees must be told what is expected of them. If standards are not met, both the job and the employee should be examined to determine what is wrong. It may be that the standard is too high or the employee is not performing up to par.
