Significant cost savings can occur through improved employee scheduling and task planning. Employee schedules are established by developing productivity standards, forecasting sales, and applying a staffing guide in order to maximize employee productivity.

Employees can be scheduled for split shifts or irregular hours, and part-time people can be used to cut costs. Another option is to store employee labor or, at least, the output of that labor. A cost-benefit analysis also can be performed in order to determine the best staffing level for the operation.

Analyzing a particular task identifies the factors affecting it and can lead to new procedures that will simplify the work. Procedures also can be identified that will minimize the movements necessary to perform the job.

Once new procedures have been established, the work area can be set up anew, the operation evaluated, and new performance standards determined, with the procedures supervised until doing them becomes a habit.
