Eaton's first investment in Europe occurred in the late 1940s, when it acquired minority interests in axle and transmission producers in the UK Eaton's presence in Europe is now substantial, with 35 manufacturing units and 1979 sales of $535 million.

European operations are managed by product group, ... with a European general manager reporting to a worldwide director of operations for his product group. The center of Eaton's operations in Europe is in the London area, near Heathrow Airport. With some 150 employees, it houses the European data-processing operations base; financial and accounting personnel, including cash and credit administration; the legal department and directors of personnel, communications and materials management; and the marketing staff for some product groups. Each staff and service operation reports to its functional counterpart at headquarters in Cleveland. The only world headquarters staff functions not represented are planning and corporate development.
