(1) Define the term "environment."
(2) Define and differentiate between "macroenvironment" and "microenvironment."
(3) There is considerable controversy as to whether the earth can supportthe number of people occupying it. Neo-Malthusians make a case forthe finiteness of the earth's carrying capacities and insistthat soon most minerals will be depleted. Refute or support that argument.
(4) With respect to the earth's pollution-absorption capacities, some peoplebelieve that the end is near. They argue that human and industrial waste cannot continue to pollute the earth and its atmosphere any longer without severe consequences which will have profound implications for humans and corporations. Make a case for or against this argument.
(5) Most international managers are advised to avoid discussing the religion of those in a host country. Yet the case was made in this chapter that religion is a very important determinant of managerial decision making. How would yc u advise a manager to approach this sensitive aspect of international business?
(6) Politics is another subject that international managers are advised not to talk about. Ye t the manager must learn as much about a country's political system as possible, and some of this knowledge must come fr om discussions with citizens of the host country. What approach would you suggest a manager take in such discussions?
(7) The data presented in this chapter clearly prove that the majority of the people of the world live below a subsistence level. Do you think that the multinational corporation has a responsibility to assist people in rising above a subsistence level? Imagine you are an officer of an MNC, and write a one-page speech to be delivered at the next annual meeting to help stockholders see that the MNC does have such a responsibility.
(8) You have just been hired by a multinational corporation that is in the industrial safety equipment business. Develop a list of emerging issues you must monitor.
(9) MNC, Inc. has decided to move its manufacturing facilities to a Third World country. Among the reasons that management offered to its employees for making the move is that the company must invest "sizeable sums of money for pollution abatement equipment as required by the new antismog law." Imagine you are an officer of the employees' union, and write a one-page speech to management explaining to them that the corporation may have to spend the same amount of money wherever it goes.
(10) Students for Responsible Business Practices (SREBPS) have staged a sitin in front of the main gate of your company. They are carrying signs saying "Get out of that fas cist country," "Stop helping the minority government kill innocent people," and "Americans should not stand for that kind of corporate behavior. Get out now!" Write a short statement to be read to the students explaining to them that your company "stays out of politics."
